Narrative:
Active and engaged citizens must understand themselves before they can understand, communicate and relate to others. We believe that this is a process that requires increasingly more complex levels of awareness and understanding. In order to fully attain this competency an individual must first explore their own social identities. They must be able to identify the perceptions that the broader society may hold about their social identities. Our goal is to help students begin the process of making meaning and deciding on the role of their social identities as they relate to their personal context. Concurrently, the student must explore the perceptions/biases/ stereotypes that they hold about social identities to which they belong and also about those to which they do not claim membership. It is essential that they trace the source of these perceptions/biases/ stereotypes.

...The money was collected from Iraqi officers and enlisted soldiers in Besmaya. In a speech given during the presentation, Col. Abbass stated that he and the Iraqi soldiers were connected with the American people in many ways, and they will not forget the help that the American government has given the Iraqi people. Abbass was honored to participate by sending a simple fund of $1,000 to the American people in San Diego, to lower the suffering felt by the tragedy. [Pic at linky]

just embare-ass-ing
we’re used to it...
Dear Babs,
You said that our California National Guard was “down 50 percent in terms of our National Guard equipment, because they’re all in Iraq" which hampered the firefighting in LA and SD.
According to LTG H Steven Blum and Paul McHale, assistant secretary of defense for Homeland Defense, 3,000 Soldiers that are not in California, are deployed overseas, today and 17,000 plus another 300 [are] on the soil of California to ... fight [wildfires]. That’s 17%.
It’s just plain embarrassing when our Senator cannot be bothered to check the facts.
Thanks, again, for making the entire state look like a bunch of stupid hippies.

LONDON (AP) Parents may worry less about losing their child — and the kid’s expensive coat ...The jackets, released this week by the British clothing company Bladerunner, have a GPS tracking device in the lining. The device can track the jacket anywhere in the world, within 43 square feet.
...Using Google Earth maps, users can watch the jacket wearer move. The movements are updated every 10 seconds.
[”...originally made for mountain climbers, skiers and snowboarders."]
...Bladerunner, which designed the jacket ...made headlines in the spring when they released slash-resistant clothing for children, aimed at those worried about increasing knife crime in London.

A look down the road
*shudder*
I remember the days when there were women “of a certain age,” usually dressed in black with sensible shoes but occasionally in bright colors or in chic beige, gathered on street corners discussing the State of the Neighborhood. Were any “yoots” so ill-advised as to act out in the sight of these women they would be hauled up sharply, smacked onna back of the head and told to straighten up, and their mothers called and informed as to their misdeeds before they could run home.
‘Course those “misdeeds” fell into the slouching, swearing or “running in the street like an animal” category. Thus, the women “of a certain age” utilized the “broken window” principle to keep things down to a dull roar. They were backed up by their husbands and sons who, hardened and tired by long days of work, would be decidedly un-amused to be greeted of an evening with reports of more serious misdeeds by their offspring.
Somehow, somewhere that all vanished in the mists and our misdeeded yoots were handed over to the “professionals” of cops and courts and social workers.
And next?
What an admission of total defeat by those in charge of our failing criminal justice system. ...
Panels of four children [age 10 and up], under only minimal adult supervision, are to have the power to require delinquents to repair the damage they’ve caused and compensate their victims.
...What we are seeing is simply the adultification of children and the infantilising of adults.

"Das peeeple ah haaapy"
Kennedyesque moment
[at] Qualcomm Stadium: Bands belted out rock ‘n’ roll, lavish buffets served gourmet entrees, and massage therapists helped relieve the stress for those forced to flee their homes because of wildfires.
Hanging out in public in a stadium for days on end anticipating returning home to their lives burnt to a crisp?
But it’s ok cuz they are eating cake.
One thing particularly noticeable about the nooooz shots of the peeeple being haaapy in the Stadium is that there are no piles of trash swirling about their ankles and there seems to be no poop on the steps to the bleachers. I’m sure that’s entirely due to the presence of “National Guard Troops with automatic weapons just in case”

Exploring the "WE" in WEASEL
what this “we” shiite, white eyes?!
Earlier this month, I came to the floor discussing comments made by Rush Limbaugh. Following my remarks, more than 40 of my Senate colleagues and I cosigned a letter to the chairman of Clear Channel, Mark May, telling him that we wanted him to—to confer [*splerque*] with Rush Limbaugh regarding the statements he made. I’ve since spoken to Mark May about this. Mark May [sic - Mays], in fact, called me regarding this letter.
This week, Rush Limbaugh put the original copy of that letter up for auction on eBay. Mr. President, we didn’t have time or we could have gotten every Democratic Senator to sign that letter. But he put the letter up for auction on eBay. And I think very, very constructively, let the proceeds of that to go to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation. What is the [bla bla bla] What could be a more worthwhile cause? And I think it’s really good that this money on eBay is going to be raised for this purpose. When I spoke to Mark May—I think that he and I thought this would probably not raise much money, a letter by Democratic Senators complaining about something. This morning, the bid is more than two million on this. We’ve watched it during the week. It keeps going up, and up, and up, and there’s only a little bit of time left on it. But it’s certainly going to be more than two million. Never did we think that this letter would bring money of this nature --the cause, Madam President, extremely good. Now, everyone knows that Rush Limbaugh and I don’t agree on everything in life, and maybe that’s kind of an understatement. But without qualification,[bla bla bla] I don’t know what we could do more important than helping make sure that children of our fallen soldiers and police officers who have fallen in the line of duty have the opportunity for their children to have a good education. Think about this. More than $2 million, this is going to really help. And that’s, again, an understatement. There’s only a little bit of time left.-- so I would ask those that are wanting to do more, that they can go to the Harry Reid, search—actually go on say “Harry Reid letter,” this will come up on eBay. I encourage anyone interested in this with the means to do so to consider bidding on this letter and contributing to this worthwhile cause.
I strongly believe that when we can put our differences aside, even Harry Reid and Rush Limbaugh, we should do that and try to accomplish good things for the American people.

End of an Era

"The Beginning and End of Our Sovereignty" -RR
Law of the Sea Treaty gonna sink US
UN originated Law of the Sea Treaty sets up International Sea Bed Authority has the ability to levy a global tax.
Human trafficking, drug trafficking, piracy and/or broadcasting piracy are the only reasons we [US] could stop a ship on the high seas. Terrorists with a nuke? Mmm, not so much....
For deep sea mining/exploration on the Continental Shelf we would have to go to a UN central authority; kinda like a global EPA which would then require an environmental impact report on the C02 released and endangered, “special status” and rare species potentially effected. Then give the rights to China or Somalia…
Dr. Peter Leitner
...The most vigorous supports of the Treaty are largely a constellation of narrow single interest groups who are willing to overlook Treaty shortcomings so long as their pet rock is included. There is also an interesting psychological phenomenon I call the “Unrequited Love Syndrome” that characterizes some experts who after 30 or so years of involvement in the Treaty would rather accept a defective Treaty than leave this world with an unfinished legacy. Only vigorous and complete oversight by the Congress will provide the big-picture assessment necessary to determine whether this Treaty is in our collective national interest. ...
Looks like another UN/Green attack on US sovereignty to me. Am I missing something?
Getting to be that tiiiiiime....
ideas?

WTF?!?
WTF?!?
the center cannot hold
Julie Myers, the head of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE), is set to deliver tonight’s keynote address in Dearborn, Mich., to ...[the] Michigan American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee ... [whose leader] is a suspected former terrorist who repeatedly violated U.S. immigration laws, then used political ties to avoid deportation.
The venue: a place known to local cops and federal agents as “The Hezbollah Social Club.”
Charming.
